Meet Vicki Werneke, the friend you need in the Oklahoma Legislature.
After retiring from over 30 years as a state and federal public defender, Vicki is ready to step-up and represent HD 92 with determination and hope.
Vicki first found herself in OKC in 1982 after graduating high school in North Dakota. She found the city to be just where she belonged while assisting her mother with her work on the Oklahoma ERA Countdown Campaign.
Vicki graduated from OCU with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. She then received her juris doctorate from OU law school. She worked as an attorney with the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, then with the Federal Public Defender, representing death row inmates with their appeals.
Vicki and her husband Ron raised two kids in Putnam City Schools, where they received a quality education that showcased just how good our schools can be.
Her family found a home at Mayflower UCC, where Vicki taught Sunday school, organized a church bowling league and served on several boards.
In 2008 Vicki accepted a job with the Federal Public Defender office in Cleveland, Ohio and moved with her husband to be closer to her own parents. Vicki’s mother was disabled and her father was her primary caregiver. Over the course of six years she learned alongside her father to navigate the complex world of hospitals an end of life care.
While in Cleveland, Vicki was actively involved with Plymouth UCC Church and the Democratic Party. She volunteered as a Poll Observer in the 2016 and 2018 election where she was able see just how confusing and fragile the right to vote can be for many people.
Moving back to Oklahoma in 2022 due to her husband's failing health,Vicki worked at the Federal Public Defender office until retiring in March 2024 to spend time with her husband and children. Helping her husband through dialysis further opened Vicki’s eyes to the numerous shortcomings in our healthcare system.
Since losing her husband in December 2024, she has been finding fulfillment in working with Legal Aid, providing free legal services to those in need. Vicki also serves as a contract attorney for Pregnancy Justice, a non-profit law firm serving women across the country.
When she moved back home to Oklahoma she also returned to her spiritual home Mayflower UCC. She serves on the church’s Board of Trustees and is driver for their Meals on Wheels program.
Joining the House of Representatives at a time when our political climate is so divisive is right up Vicki’s alley. With those years of hard work in the federal court system and a go-getter attitude she can show up, and fight for her neighbors with a positive attitude.
