How I want to fight for every Oklahoman
Criminal Justice Reform
I will work to make the system fairer for citizens accused of crimes by enacting legislation that holds the State accountable for mistakes.
Victims of crimes and their families suffer trauma that affects all aspects of their lives. Services for victims need to be addressed in a holistic manner that goes beyond whether they testify in court; services such as counseling, financial assistance, educational opportunities, and housing, even.
The Parole Board needs to be reimagined, where the majority of the members are not political appointees. We need to reform the criteria by which the Parole Board determines who gets parole or not. Too many people are left to rot in prison without any hope. There’s more to everyone than the worst thing they have ever done.
Equal Protections
I will continue my mother’s work by introducing a measure to add an Equal Rights Amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution.
The ERA is needed now to ensure all citizens of the State are fully protected under the law. A citizen should not have fewer rights than others just because of their gender. This will require a state question to ensure women have representation and protection against legislation that would target or exclude them.
The ERA simply states, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex”.
I will also work tirelessly to prevent the chipping away of our voting rights and bodily autonomy.
Tenet Rights and Housing Access
As a renter, I know how the current laws favor landlords.
I will fight to expand protections for tenants when dealing with landlords, such as making air conditioning an essential service, giving tenants the ability to break their lease when the landlord refuses to address and fix needed repairs in a timely manner.
There needs to be a limit on the number of units owned and operated by out-of-state entities and instill protections against slum-lords.
Protecting Public Education
I will fight to repeal the current school voucher program to keep funding in our public schools.
Retain and attract high-quality educators via equitable pay structures with accounting for longevity, education or training level, and student impact. Provide qualified and motivated support staff.
